Weather Balloons Used to Contraband Cigarettes Closed Airport in Lithuania

Recovered contraband balloons
A minimum of 11 of the weather balloons, containing 18,000 packages of black-market cigarettes, have been collected so far

Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.

Aviation Problems

The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.

Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.

A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.

Regional Smuggling Pattern

Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."

To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.

Cross-Border Effects

At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.

Illegal Transport Methods

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."

International Concerns

Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.

Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
