Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
